Below is a ranking of the top 25 salmon rivers in Iceland in 2024 with total season catch statistics and the average catch per rod for each river. The 2024 salmon season in Iceland was by and large very positive . The total catch of the top 25 rivers in Iceland rose to 30,777 salmon, a 23% increase over the total of 23,721 rod caught salmon in in the 25 top rivers of 2023.
Once again the West Rangá was the most productive salmon river in Iceland, with total season catch of 4.601 salmon. The upward trend has continued since the change in river management three years ago. The Midfjardará rose two places in the ranking replacing the East Rangá in second place with a total catch of 2,458 salmon, almost doubling its total for 2023. Perhaps actions taken by the river management are beginning to show. Fishermen were very optimistic about the next season citing the excellent numbers and the fact that a disproportionate component of this year’s catch was made up of male grilse. The thought is that the females that did not accompany the males this season will be back next season in large numbers as msw fish.
The Thverá-Kjarrá was third in the ranking with a total catch of 2239 salmon. Whereas the East Rangá placed 4th in the ranking with 2202 salmon caught on 18 rods, continuing the downward trend of the last few years. River managers cited adverse conditions throughout the season with floods dirtyiing up the river repeatedly making for difficult fishing,
